The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali: Meditation, reading and study group.

This will be a meditative enquiry into the primary yoga text of the Yoga Sutras. Anyone who studies and practices yoga will sooner or later want to read the yoga sutras as they are an essential text for understanding in depth the meaning of yoga. This group will begin in an atmosphere of open enquiry as to the value of such a text in the 21st century. For example one of the claims in the sutras is that there are some qualities of being fully human that are relevant to all humans at any time in history or in any place on earth. One of the interesting aspects of this study is the similarities between the principals of Buddhism and Yoga. We will also look for connections with Christianity ,Taoism and Shamanism. It is clear that Yoga is not a religion, however it does form a foundation for spiritual enquiry. The approach to the text will be both serious, interactive and at times playful. This group will be facilitated by Charlie Stevens MA(psych) H.dip (psych) BWY dip.

Chanting

Come along and experience it for yourself!

Yoga Nidra

“Yoga nidra” literally means yogic sleep. It is used to describe a state of deep, full body relaxation in which the body rests as it does during sleep but the mind stays conscious and moves into a state of deep meditative awareness as the brain waves slow down. It is an incredibly effective tool for inducing the relaxation response (the opposite of the stress response) and has been used successfully to counteract stress, induce a state of deep healing and as a support for those who suffer from anxiety and insomnia. During the practice of yoga nidra, all the parts of the body are brought into awareness and thus the sensory and motor aspects associated with each body part, organ and so on become balanced. It has been said that 30 minutes of yoga nidra is the equivalent of 3 hours sleep and certainly it has been mine and many others experience that you will emerge from the practice feeling rested and rejuvenated. In this yoga nidra class, we will begin the practice with some gentle movement aimed as releasing tension held in the musculo-skeletal system. Then we will practice yoga nidra followed by some time for reflection and integration.

This class is held on Friday evening once a month:
April 17th: 6.30-7.30pm
