MAY AND JUNE AT UNITY YOGA

May 18th, 2009

NEW CLASSES:

Explorations in Yoga

AN EXCITING NEW CLASS FOR INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED YOGA STUDENTS!!
Teachers: Aria Ungerer & Daniela Iacopino
Starts Thursday, May 7th, 7.30-9.30pm.

This class is suitable for students who have been practicing yoga
regularly for at least 8 months and is aimed in particular at those
who want to develop their home practice further. The Explorations in
Yoga class invites students to develop and nurture a curiosity of
spirit by presenting an integrated, somatic approach to Yoga Asanas
and Asana sequences. This means that there is a strong emphasis on
developing the ability to self-reference and rely more strongly on
internal cues based on breath and sensation as a way of finding
alignment and refinement in Asanas. By practicing in this way, you
will gain greater confidence, skill, and independence in your
practice and deepen your understanding of what you are practicing.

This term, each class starts with a Pranayama/ breathing practice
followed by a movement enquiry/ warm up and then a set sequence of
Asanas. Each week this term we will explore the same sequence from
different perspectives, e.g working with the earth element and
emphasizing the alignment of bones and joints, finding the support of
the water element and the fluids in the body or working more with the
Pranamayakosha (energy body) and finding more energetic support in
the practice. Each class will finish with the practice of Restorative
Yoga and a guided meditation or relaxation.

COST: E160 for 9 weeks

TAUGHT BY LAURENCE O’TOOLE

This is the first teacher training course to be run in Munster and is set to begin in July 2009. The course is aimed at those interested in becoming certificated Iyengar Yoga Teachers. It is also open to those wishing to expand on their existing yoga practice although not wishing to become teachers or take the relevant assessments. The course will begin on the last weekend of July, 24th/25th with the next weekend on the 7th/8th August. Thereafter the following weekends will be at approximately six week intervals. Dates have yet to be finalized.

Some criteria for those wishing to do the teacher training element of the course are as follows:
- At least two years of yoga experience prior to the course.
- Candidates should be attending classes conducted by a certificated Iyengar teacher (if possible).
- On entry to the course those attending will be expected to become members of the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) (the body responsible for overseeing assessments in Ireland and the British Isles)

Provisional structure of the course
Weekend workshops: Friday evening 2 to 3 hours. Saturday 5 or 6 hours.
Throughout the year there will be either 9 or 10 weekends with a mandatory 1 week intensive in June 2010. The intensive will take place at Ahrtal Yoga in the beautiful medieval town of Ahrweiler, Germany. The assessment for Level I is at the end of June 2010 and can be done in Ireland or the UK. It is envisaged that the Introductory Level II course will commence in July/August 2010 and will follow a similar structure with the assessment taking place in October 2011.

DATES FOR 2009:

24/25th July
7/8th August
11/12th September
Either 16th/17th October or 23/24th October
20/21st November
11/12th December.

The number of hours for the course is estimated to be between 100 to 120 hours for each level with the cost in the region of €1250 to €1500 per level.

Those interested in participating in the course and who are unknown to me are advised to attend one or both of the general workshops on the 28th February and 25th April. Please understand the final decision for accepting candidates for the course rests with me and will be based on your own work in the asanas and your understanding of what you are doing.

By the Grace, I will have put in place all the organizational aspects of the course by the time of the February workshop. I am at presently awaiting the revised Introductory handbook to be sent to me in the New Year.

YOGA IN THE TRADITION OF VANDA SCARAVELLI By Margaret Hardman

November 13th, 2008

Vanda Scaravelli was a unique person; a musician, an intellectual, and for me, primarily a practitioner of Yoga who has left a legacy with us in the intuitive teaching of primarily Diane Long and also Sophy Hoare. There are others among her students teaching but these two women are my teachers. They act as a catalyst to the unravelling of the body in a way I have never before experienced and I think it’s magic. The practice hinges on the understanding that in response to gravity and the breath there is a division of movement in the spine at L4/5 enabling the body to be simultaneously deeply rooted in the ground and also ‘flying’ upwards. The spine releases earthwards from the waist down and also elongates and extends upwards from the waist. It truly is experienced as a wave. This wave-like movement may only happen when the body is deeply rested and, paradoxically, absolutely alert and vibrantly active.
Yoga is not a methodology or a technique, but a state of being. The intelligence of the body is so often ignored even though we take it completely for granted, e.g. the healing of a broken bone or a cut. Why then do we continue to push and pull the body around in order to achieve? The asanas were after all developed as a means of ridding the body of restlessness, tension, and agitation. So, what happens if we start listening to ourselves and trusting this innate intelligence? Perhaps we may begin to feel the tensions we have gathered and begin to release and soften the outer layers of the body, trust the body to the ground and let go; of all our preconceived ideas about posture, breath, and movement, even of intelligence. As we begin to really listen to this miracle of the human body it takes advantage of this opportunity to talk to us and show us new ways of being. Isn’t this the philosophy of Yoga in action, in asana, in meditation? In time the body discovers for itself, a freedom, lightness, spaciousness and strength and the asanas take on a new quality that is noticeable and very visible. Do not be fooled into thinking it is easy, it is really strong and very hard work!! The experience is unlike anything else I have known and the practice of Yoga deepens and changes daily as I need to become more and more of a beginner, and that, believe me, is the biggest challenge of all.

With thanks to my lovely teachers Diane and Sophy for this gift of Yoga and to all my students who continue to inspire me with their trust, curiosity and commitment.

Margaret will teach two workshops on November 30th
Sophy Hoare will teach a weekend workshop from January 31st/February 1st.

Post Natal Yoga for Mums and Babies

September 24th, 2008

Having a baby is probably the most amazing and transformative time of a womans life. But along with the bliss of loving your little creation come some challenges, both physical and emotional. Post natal yoga is designed to help you to get back in shape physically, and support you emotionally through this wonderful time.

Tums and Bums
Giving birth tends to weaken the pelvic floor, which can result in leakage of urine and lessening of sexual sensation, and abdominal muscles also become stretched and weakened which can contribute to lower back pain. Post natal yoga uses specific exercises designed to get your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles back in shape again. As well as getting tums back in shape, we use exercises to shape up bums as well, helping you to get your figure back.

Relaxed and Energised
New mums often experience neck and shoulder tension and shallow breathing which tends to accompany a lack of sleep and the common habit of hunching over to feed your baby. Post natal yoga uses exercises to release this muscle tension, deepen the breath, and raise energy levels, helping you to feel good emotionally as well as physically.

The post natal yoga class at Unity Yoga is for one hour each week, and mothers are encouraged to bring their babies with them to the class. We take a relaxed approach, so during the class you’re always welcome to take time out to feed or to play with your baby. All the exercises are written out for you, so that once you have learned them correctly in class, you can practice them at home.

The Post Natal Yoga Class with Libby will begin on Wednesday, October 22nd from 11am – 12pm
To register for the class, please phone us (086 3014428) or email us (info@unity-yoga.net)
